Return to the Scholomance - and face an even deadlier graduation - in the stunning sequel to the ground-breaking, Sunday Times bestselling A Deadly Education

The dark school of magic has always done its best to devour its students, but now that El has reached her final year -- and somehow won herself a handful of allies along the way -- it's suddenly developed a very particular craving 。 。 。

For her。

As the savagery of the school ramps up, El is determined that she will not give in; not to the mals, not to fate, and especially not to the Scholomance。 But as the spectre of graduation looms -- the deadly final ritual that leaves few students alive -- if she and her allies are to make it out, El will need to realise that sometimes winning the game means throwing out all the rules。

El grows so much again。 I love to see it。 The ending is abrupt。 But satisfying。

Senior year is finally here, and the Scholomance is out to get El。 Not only is she placed in seminar, making her a target for the school’s worse resident maleficaria (wizard-eating magical creatures), but her classmates and only support are helpless freshman。 Orion isn’t having an easy final year either。 Low on mana and finding few mals to hunt, his schoolwork is suffering and he might not make it to fight in the deadly ritual that is graduation。 As El’s concern for both Orion and her classmates Senior year is finally here, and the Scholomance is out to get El。 Not only is she placed in seminar, making her a target for the school’s worse resident maleficaria (wizard-eating magical creatures), but her classmates and only support are helpless freshman。 Orion isn’t having an easy final year either。 Low on mana and finding few mals to hunt, his schoolwork is suffering and he might not make it to fight in the deadly ritual that is graduation。 As El’s concern for both Orion and her classmates grows, she must choose her allies wisely as she and Orion prepare for the most important battle of their lives。This book picked me up and swallowed me as fast as maleficaria devour young wizards。 I’ve clamored for the second book in the Scholomance series since I closed A Deadly Education last year。 The Scholomance is an original and thrilling addition to the magical boarding school trope。 I didn’t want to leave the sarcastic, deadpan characters; the endlessly imaginative deadly creatures; and the breadth of magical spells and incantations in this rich magical world。The stakes are higher in The Last Graduate and the solution to graduation was more awesome than I anticipated。 The action-packed conclusion elicited some strong emotional reactions from me。 I exclaimed, sobbed, and cheered along with the characters at their triumphs。 Even the audible gasp that escaped my lips at the cliff-hanging last line isn’t strong enough to convince me to recommend any delay in reading this book until book three is available。 If you couldn’t already tell, I can’t recommend this fantasy series enough。 I’m an overenthusiastic Naomi Novik fangirl for life。 。。。more

Holy cow, can I give this 10 stars?!? Naomi Novik writes the most amazing books, and each one is better than the one before。 The ending on this one was so startling that I had to go back and read it 2 more times to make sense out of what I just read。 I hope she writes more about this alternative world, because this is just completely engrossing reading, IMHO。

the ending turned me into the Smoking Ben Affleck meme and I would prefer to be, not that

I need the third book right now, the ending, oh my god。 The cliffhanger at the end left me dead

Lucy

Such a strong voice, fast paced and hard to put down!

I looked forward to this book like crazy - however~The moment the title was released I had some sort of divine insight that just told me how it would end。 Turned out 。。。 I was 100% right。I didn't know how we would get there or what would happen on the way, but sure as hell, we ended up with exactly the ending I somehow knew was coming。The further into the story I came the more and more convinced I became of the outcome too。And 。。。 that sort of ruined the book for me。 😅I loved the first book so m I looked forward to this book like crazy - however~The moment the title was released I had some sort of divine insight that just told me how it would end。 Turned out 。。。 I was 100% right。I didn't know how we would get there or what would happen on the way, but sure as hell, we ended up with exactly the ending I somehow knew was coming。The further into the story I came the more and more convinced I became of the outcome too。And 。。。 that sort of ruined the book for me。 😅I loved the first book so much, but I couldn't get into this one as much。 I found I liked El better when she had thorns all over and was a loner and didn't really fit into the stereotype of the "Chosen One" - which to my utter disappointment I found her slipping perfectly into in this book。I'm not saying she should have stayed friendless and angry at the world, but her growing into the role of heroine felt very "fairytale-esque", in lack of a better description。Like 。。。 a thing that almost never actually happens。 Feels absurd to say that about a story built with such outrageous amounts of pure, creative fantasy, but I can't help feeling that it was a bit too sugary sweet for me personally。 I can buy a murderous school doing its thing within a magic black hole (sort of), but the complete 180 of El's social situation felt a bit too good to be true。 As a teen it would have made me sentimentally happy and I would have probably cried while wishing reality were just like that, but 。。。 as a chronically cynical adult I mentally "noped out" somewhere half way。I also got basically fed up with El feeding me a lot of info about the different enclaves and all the intrigues and backstories and politics and EVERYTHING ELSE that was going on in the background。 Things that the plot couldn't explain so instead they were served up as sometimes massive info dumps。I usually don't mind info dumps if they are well done and I really love Naomi Novik's writing and imagination, but still 。。。 It got a bit heavy and dense and not very exciting at times。 I felt myself checking out mentally and had to remind myself I was supposed to pay attention because I actually liked the plot and characters and wanted to know what was going on。 (Maybe it would have worked better for me if I had been reading the book instead of listening to it。 Big chunks of context work better in text form, at least for me。)Never the less, the plot felt a bit thin。 Like a side dish to all that context and a long transportation to that ending I knew was coming。So now I sit here and wonder what on earth I should rate this book。 3。5 stars, probably。 Condensed in my mind now afterwards it feels OK to give it 4 stars, but the actually experience was more like a 3。 I hate to say it, but I think The Last Graduate suffers from the dreaded Middle Book Syndrome - and that's a shame, but, yes, I will of course turn up for book 3。 Fingers crossed that it will be dark purple。 Or dark red。 🤞🏻 。。。more

Well that was fun! I am going to go mad waiting for the third book, as I definitely had thought this was a two book series (and evidently, it started that way), but I see that the third book is pretty far along so hopefully it will be in a year? This book felt extremely fast-paced compared to the first book, which itself was fast-paced。 The vast majority of the book was focused on the latter half of the school year, with some fairly intense detail。 I really loved the concept of the school as an entity or construct imbued with purpose and a certain amount of latitude to enforce its purpose on others。 Meh, spoilers so I remember when I go back and look at what the book was about in preparation for the third book。 (view spoiler)[So in the beginning of the book, El finds herself the overwhelming target of all the maleficaria in the school, to the point where no one else essentially encounters them。 At first, she assumes this is because the school is trying to turn her evil in order to fulfill some absence of mana (a bit squiffy on the details I am)。 However, she eventually realizes that the Scholomance needs her to fulfill its fundamental mission of protecting and safeguarding children。 Because of the way in which the Scholomance has deteriorated -- where hundreds of children die in there, but it's still safer than the outside world -- and it cannot function as it must。 So it makes everyone come to rely on El for her ability to kill mals, along with Orion。 And she, by working with everyone, elects to save everyone, pull in as many mals as they possibly can, and send the school off into the void with thousands and thousands of mals in it, no longer part of the world。 It's a cleverly constructed story! I really enjoyed it。 They more or less successfully did this in the end, but the book ends on the most insane cliffhanger with Orion seemingly not following El out of the school that is literally about to explode, so he can destroy the most mega maw-mouth in existence。 I assume that was why El's mother told her to stay away from Orion -- not out of a fear that he was evil or something, but because her heart is going to be DESTROYED。 (hide spoiler)] Anyway, I cannot wait for the next book and loved this one。 。。。more

I know these books are not to everyone’s taste, especially readers who expected another Spinning Silver or something。 I really enjoy them though。 I love the suspense, the prickly heroine, the learning curves! Very smart plot framework。 I never guess what’s going to happen next but then it seems inevitable once you get there。 Really looking forward to book three。

I literally screamed at the ending。 I cannot wait for the next one!!!!!

Holy crap。 I need the third book NOW!

This plot-heavy sequel to the promising A Deadly Education builds out the already dense world of the first installment and deepens the character development。 The book occasionally drifted into video game structure, an approach I generally find off-putting in fiction, but I was invested enough in the characters and their relationships not to mind it here—certainly invested enough to be bereft that I can’t immediately dive into the final book to resolve that cliffhanger of an ending。 More than any This plot-heavy sequel to the promising A Deadly Education builds out the already dense world of the first installment and deepens the character development。 The book occasionally drifted into video game structure, an approach I generally find off-putting in fiction, but I was invested enough in the characters and their relationships not to mind it here—certainly invested enough to be bereft that I can’t immediately dive into the final book to resolve that cliffhanger of an ending。 More than anything else, the best indicator of how I felt is probably that I simply couldn’t put it down。 。。。more

Really great bookIt can seem dragging in ways but El’s internal musings are unique and the world building is amazing。 I waited a while for the second book to come out and I guess I’ll be waiting longer for the next installment hopefully?

Pretty big let down after the first book。 A lot left unanswered and just kind of odd plot development

AHHH so good。 Exactly what I was hoping for in the sequel。 Cannot wait for the next one!

What a let-down after the promising start of the first book…the many intricately detailed descriptions of the structures of everything overwhelmed the human interactions, and, I figured out what would happen at the end halfway through the book。

I love how gradually everyone becomes aware of El’s power, and the development of the love story is incredibly sweet。 But I’m still traumatized by the ending。 I re-read the nice parts to try to replace the memory with happier ones, but it hasn’t worked。
